Development Economics
This is a class that I occasionally teach as an elective for my economics majors. It is basically a study of the economics of poor countries. We look at topics like poverty and inequality, population, the environment, international finance, and others. We also study theoretical perspectives, and I deliberately give short shrift to modernization theory as it is mostly inapplicable to the experience of most developing countries. I prefer to emphasize dependency and world systems theories, which are much more historically relevant.
