Senior Advanced Seminar
This is a required course for all economics majors, and I teach it every year in the Spring semester. What I do is assign several books to read, usually four or five, to be discussed and written about by the students. The class is capped at a maximum of 15 to allow for a seminar environment consisting of active discussion of the assigned reading. While I vary the assigned books somewhat over the years, Milton Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom and Amartya Sen’s Development as Freedom make fairly regular appearances.
